Matsya Avatar Katha

Matsya Avatar is the incarnation manifested by Bhagwan Vishnu to rescue the stolen Vedas. According to Hindu scriptures, including the Shrimad Bhagavata Purana and the Padma Purana, there are three different accounts associated with the Matsya Avatar. These stories are described below.

1. The Story of Matsya Avatar: The Rescue of the Vedas from Hayagriva

There was a time when Brahma Ji felt drowsy and wished to sleep. As a result, the Vedas slipped out of his mouth. A demon named Hayagriva, who was living nearby, seized the opportunity and decided to steal the Vedas from Brahma Ji.

As soon as Hayagriva stole the Vedas, a partial dissolution of the universe, known as Naimittika Pralaya, took place. During this dissolution, all the worlds were submerged in the cosmic ocean. Lord Hari, being omniscient, became aware of Hayagriva’s evil deed and decided to manifest as a fish, known as Matsya Avatar, to rescue the sacred Vedas.

How Bhagwan Matsya Rescued the Vedas from Hayagriva

King Satyavrata was a royal sage of the Dravida region and an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu. One day, he was performing penance on the Malaya Mountains. As part of his spiritual practice, he survived solely on water.

In the present cosmic cycle, King Satyavrata was destined to be reborn as Vaivasvata Manu.

One day, while offering water to his ancestors in the Kritamala River, King Satyavrata noticed a tiny fish in his cupped hands. He released it back into the river, but the fish pleaded with him not to do so, explaining that larger aquatic creatures might devour it. The fish sought the protection for the king.

Moved by compassion, the king placed the fish in a water pot. However, the fish grew so rapidly that the pot soon became too small to contain it. Within just two ghadis (a traditional unit of time), the fish grew to three cubits in length.

The king then moved the fish into a larger lake. However, the fish continued to grow at an astonishing rate. No matter where the king placed it, the fish soon outgrew its surroundings and increased enormously in size.

The king again thought to release it into the ocean. However, the fish once again pleaded with him, saying, “O King, please do not leave me here. Please protect me.”

The king then asked, “Who are You, O Lord, who have assumed the form of a fish and bewildered me in this manner? In a single day, You have filled a lake measuring four hundred kos in extent. You cannot be an ordinary creature, nor can You be a mere mystic being. You are undoubtedly Lord Hari, the all-powerful, all-pervading, and eternal Supreme Being. Please tell me the divine purpose behind this manifestation”

The Lord replied, “Seven days from today, all three worlds will be submerged in the ocean of dissolution. At that time, a great boat will appear before you through My divine arrangement. You must take aboard the subtle bodies of all living beings, along with the great sages (Saptarishis). Make sure to bring all the medicinal herbs and seeds as well. Throughout the night of Brahma, I will accompany you, guide your boat across the cosmic ocean, and answer all your questions.”

After speaking these words, Lord Matsya disappeared.

Seven days later, the dissolution took place, and everything happened exactly as Bhagwan Matsya had foretold. On that day, Matsya Bhagwan appeared once again. His body shone like sparkling gold, extended to four hundred thousand kos, and bore a mighty horn.

The boat was tied to His horn using the serpent Vasuki as a rope. King Satyavrata offered prayers to the Lord. Pleased with his devotion, Bhagwan Vishnu revealed the profound mysteries of His divine nature and imparted the knowledge of Brahman to him, as described in the Matsya Purana.

When Brahma Ji awoke from His deep sleep, Bhagwan Vishnu killed the demon Hayagriva and returned the sacred Vedas to Brahma Ji.

2. The Story of Matsya Avatar According to the Padma Purana

Once upon a time, the ocean had a son named Shankha. Shankha defeated the gods, drove them out of heaven, and seized authority over the world.

The gods took refuge in the caves of Mount Meru, where they remained safe from the demon’s reach. Shankha believed that the gods derived their immense power from the Vedas. Therefore, he decided to steal the sacred scriptures and carried out his plan.

On Kartik Shukla Prabodhini Ekadashi, Brahma Ji sought refuge in Lord Vishnu. Bhagwan Hari assured him that He would assume the form of a fish to save the world and recover the stolen Vedas.

Lord Vishnu descended from the sky into the cupped hands of Sage Kashyapa, who lived in the Vindhya Mountains. Moved by compassion, Sage Kashyapa transferred the fish successively into a water pot, a well, a pond, a river, and other bodies of water. Eventually, he placed the fish in the ocean, where it grew into an enormous creature.

In His divine fish incarnation, Lord Vishnu killed the demon Shankhasura. Holding the slain demon, He then proceeded to the Badri forest.

There, Vishnu Ji summoned all the sages and instructed them to search for the Vedas scattered beneath the ocean. He directed them to recover the complete scriptures, including their hidden meanings, and bring them back without delay.

Through their spiritual power and strength, the sages recovered the Vedic mantras, along with the knowledge of sacrificial rituals and the seeds associated with them. From that time onward, each sage became known as the Rishi associated with the particular portion of the Vedas whose mantras he had discovered.

Thereafter, Brahma Ji, accompanied by all the sages, approached Lord Vishnu and offered Him the recovered Vedas.

3. Another Account of Matsya Avatar: The Rescue of the Vedas from Makar

According to another account, Rishi Kashyapa and his wife Diti had several sons, including Makar, Hayagriva, the mighty Hiranyakashipu, Jambha, and Maya.

One day, Makar went to Brahmaloka and bewildered Lord Brahma. He seized all the Vedas from Brahma Ji and hid them in the vast ocean.

As a result, the entire world became deprived of Dharma, righteousness, and sacred knowledge. Seeing the world plunged into such a state, Brahma Ji prayed to Lord Vishnu to protect creation from the demon’s evil deeds.

In response to Brahma Ji’s prayers, Lord Vishnu decided to manifest as Matsya, the divine fish. He entered the vast ocean and confronted the demon Makar. Lord Vishnu killed Makar by tearing him apart with the tip of His snout.

After defeating the demon, He recovered all the Vedas, including their divisions and supplementary portions, and returned them to Lord Brahma.

Thus, through His Matsya Avatar, Bhagwan Vishnu restored the sacred knowledge of the Vedas and protected the cosmic order.
